The MMQB’s Albert Breer shares an anecdote about the Washington Commanders pre-draft process.
Washington, which holds the second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is hosting a bunch of quarterbacks for top-30 visits this week. Together. In the same place. At the same time. For two days. As part of a larger group of prospects. Breer hears that LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, and Washington’s Michael Penix are going to be spending some quality time together. This sounds like a chaotic kind of fun.
So if you are like me and have wondered what it might look like if The Bachelor and the NFL Draft came together to have a child, I think we are about to get and answer:
One notable quarterback prospect the Commanders are not hosting: Caleb Williams.
It seems normal to host four quarterback prospects this time of year. Having them together on the same date makes sense, too. But having four signal callers at the facility at the same time seems odd. But that is how the Washington football team is doing it in 2024. Kudos to the Commanders for thinking outside of the box, I guess.
Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, and Michael Penix are visiting the Commanders TOGETHER
If you were curious as to why Bears fans were so vocally rooting for whichever teams were playing the Carolina Panthers in a given week, this is why. Somewhere, there is an alternate universe in which Chicago’s football team is doing something similar because it doesn’t have the No. 1 pick. I don’t want to think about what it would be like if the Bears traded Justin Fields and were left to choose from quarterbacks who weren’t the consensus top prospect in the class. No thanks!
And I sure don’t envy Alternate Universe Luis, who is likely sitting in a dark room trying to talk himself into Daniels, Maye, McCarthy, or Penix because Caleb Williams is Washington-bound. Thankfully, I’m in this universe. Although, I do sometimes wonder what things would look like on a different timeline. But that might be a different post for another day.
Back in present day, Caleb Williams is a virtual lock to go No. 1 to the Chicago Bears. And that has the Washington Commanders pivoting to the other quarterbacks at the top of the draft.
This is such a fascinating development to me. Maybe it is because I recently finished another season watching The Bachelor with the group chat, but reading that these four quarterbacks are visiting Washington together is giving off group date vibes. Down to the two-night special. Gosh, I hope someone spills the tea. What is Jayden wearing to dinner? What are Drake’s red flags? Will JJ give the Commanders the ick? Can Penix talk his way into a first impression rose? There are so many questions that I imagine the Washington brass has for these quarterbacks. I’m just wonderstruck that they’ll all be answering them together.
