We’ve been waiting for it. Begging for it. And now, it’s done. The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a contract extension to keep defenseman Alex Vlasic in the fold for a long time. Vlasic has reportedly agreed to a six-year, $27.6 million contract extension ($4.6M AAV). Scott Powers of The Athletic broke the news. The team has confirmed the deal.

“Alex made enormous strides this year and proved he is a legitimate top-four defenseman in the NHL,” said Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson. “In his first full season in the NHL, Alex established himself as an important piece of our young core, and we’re excited to have him with us for the next six years.”
Vlasic, 22, was originally a second-round pick (No. 43) by the Blackhawks in the 2019 NHL Draft. He signed with the Blackhawks after three solid seasons at Boston University and immediately impressed during a 15-game showcase at the end of the 2021-22 season. He spent most of the 2022-23 season in Rockford before becoming an every night staple on the Blackhawks’ top defensive pair with Seth Jones this past season.
He has emerged as one of the best defensive defensemen in the National Hockey League. Here’s his player card from The Athletic:
In getting this deal done, the Blackhawks have the first key contract done with a core piece of their rebuild. It also gives general manager Kyle Davidson some cost certainty for the six next years. I absolutely LOVE the deal for all parties.
Vlasic and Jones will skate together for the US at the upcoming World Championship.
