Overpaying DeMar DeRozan? Marc Eversley, Chicago Sky Tickets, and Other Bulls Bullets

Being able to watch Coby White is the only reason I wish the Chicago Bulls snuck into the No. 8 seed.

  • Ridiculed for their offseason signing of DeMar DeRozan three years ago, the Chicago Bulls walked away on top. What was once considered an overpay at three years, $82 million became arguably one of the best contracts in the NBA. DeRozan made back-to-back All-Star appearances to begin his time with the franchise, and he also finished top 13 in total points scored each season (this included a second-place finish in 2021-22). Putting aside the lack of team-wide success, it’s hard to deny that DeRozan was playing at a max-contract level, which is precisely why the next few months will be fascinating.
  • When will they learn? Bleacher Report tried to predict the five players who will be overpaid this offseason, and I bet you can guess who showed up first! Look, I do think there is a world where DeRozan’s next deal makes us grimace. And that’s a complicated thing for someone who completely respects what DeRozan has done. On the one hand, he’s earned one last hefty payday after single-handedly keeping this team afloat for the past few years. We’ve also seen a few signs that he’s diminishing in value. The way he approaches the game offensively, specifically with his deadly mid-range game, should continue to age gracefully.

  • On the other hand, paying for past performance is rarely a good idea. The Chicago Bulls need to remember that DeRozan is (1) about to turn 35 years old and (2) not the kind of player worth retooling around. At this point in his career, DeRozan belongs on a contending team where he doesn’t have to be the No. 1 option. With all of that said, what Bleacher Report seems to consider an “overpay” is still downright disrespectful. Here’s what they wrote …
  • “His reputation and the fact that this is a relatively weak free-agent class mean he’ll probably sign another contract that will pay him around $20 million annually, but that will feel onerous by the end of the deal, when DeRozan is well into his late 30s.”

  • Um, $20 million year might be considered a steal! Let’s not forget he made $27.3 million annually during his last contract. And, again, that felt like a massive underpay! Rumor has it that DeRozan also turned down a deal worth $80 million over two seasons. Does that feel like a lot? Sure, but it’s far closer to what DeRozan probably should be making than what B/R suggests. If we’re being honest, $20 million is becoming nothing in today’s league.
  • ICYMI: Marc Eversley’s name came up in another front-office rumor this week. To be sure, I highly doubt he’ll end up elsewhere this offseason, but I do think this tells us a lot about what the rest of the league thinks of him. If the Chicago Bulls can put it together for a season or two, that could be all it takes for a team to pry him away.
  • I find this Andre Drummond stat to be pretty incredible …
  • I remember watching this game in awe. You could tell the Chicago Bulls were furious that the series went six.
  • Rumor has it that if the NBA goes back to NBC, the Chicago Bulls curse will officially be broken!
  • There has been increasing talk about what could happen to the famous Inside the NBA crew on TNT if the NBA leaves the network. Fortunately, it sounds like the crew could team up elsewhere.
  • The Chicago Tribune Julia Poe noted that Chicago Sky ticket sales are through the roof. Even the price of preseason games has reached new heights!
  • The Sky will tip off their preseason action on Saturday against the Minnesota Lynx. They’ll then face the New York Liberty before the season opens up against the Dallas Wings on May 15. In case you wanted to put it on your calendar, the first matchup between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark will be on Saturday, June 1 in Indiana. The cheapest ticket for that battle right now – per Ticketmaster – is $138 … and that’s in row 11 of section 215 (aka the nosebleeds at Gainbridge Fieldhouse). The hype is so real.
  • New Sky center Kamilla Cardoso will be featured in a new four-part docuseries by Payton Manning’s production company!
  • You gotta love a bright future!
  • Ryan Poles is cooking.
