Who is the Bulls’ Next All-Star? Shaq Talks Playing MJ for the First Time, and Other Bulls Bullets

Fun Fact: The Chicago Bulls watched Derrick Rose officially become the youngest MVP in NBA history 13 years ago today. Legendary stuff.

  • When the clock isn’t running, few sporting moments are cooler than an MVP award ceremony. Rose accepting that trophy in front of a packed United Center is an image that’s permanently implanted in my brain. He immediately held it up high and spun around for the crowd to see. Known for his – oftentimes awkward – lack of emotion, even Rose couldn’t help but let out a smile or two.
  • Of course, the added component of Rose’s hometown roots made this one more poignant than most, but I’m still a sucker for most MVP trophy presentations. Last year’s with a crying Joel Embiid and a raucous Philly crowd was also as good as it gets.
  • Who will be the next Bulls player to receive this honor? Heck, who will be the next Bulls play to make an All-Star team? Is that player even on the current roster? Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan may each have another All-Star appearance in them, but the future for both in Chicago is up in the air right now. While I’d love to say Coby White after the breakout season we just witnessed, we can’t forget how freakin’ hard it is to receive this acknowledgment. Jamal Murray, Mikal Bridges, and CJ McCollum help represent an upper-echelon of NBA backcourt players who have yet to make an All-Star Game during their careers. White is going to have to take another monster jump – and the Bulls are going to have to win games – to seriously receive consideration.
  • Otherwise, it’s kind of sad to think the Bulls’ next All-Star may not currently be on this roster. The front office has really struggled to draft high-upside young talent, which is why this upcoming draft feels so important. This will be only the second-ever lottery pick that Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley have to play with, so let’s hope they can get it right.

  • Shaquille O’Neal reflected on what it was like to play prime Michael Jordan in a discussion with JJ Redick on The Big Podcast, and it sounds about right: “It’s like seeing God. Because the stuff that he did on TV, and then you see it in real life, it’s like ‘oh my god, this is really real.'” I think this has to be part of the GOAT debate, honestly. A lot of stories you hear about MJ revolve around the utter disbelief people had the first time they faced him. Even Larry Bird was calling the man a God before he even won a championship!
  • Andre Drummond showed some love to Alex Caruso for his well-deserved honor. For some more on why Caruso won the NBA’s Hustle Award, check out our post here.
  • SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK, CHUCK! In case you missed it, Patrick Beverley did two totally unacceptable things last night. More on that here.
  • If you’re wondering where Brett has been on the Cubs side, he discussed it here. Keep being strong, Bert!
  • You gotta love a little lottery simulator!
