The Chicago Sky will begin a new era on Friday night.
The organization is gearing up for its first of two preseason battles before the regular season tips off on May 15. This first contest will come on the road against the Minnesota Lynx, who are looking to build on a 19-21 record from the previous season. The second matchup will be against the star-studded New York Liberty in Chicago on May 7.
Will Chicago Sky Rookies Play?
While the outcome of this evening’s game may not matter, this will be the first time fans will get a look at the Sky’s revamped roster. The organization drafted Kamilla Cardoso (3), Angel Reese (8), and Brynna Maxwell (13) in the first round of the 2024 WNBA Draft. None of the three appear on the latest injury reporting, paving the way for each to make their Chicago Sky debut.
Plenty of eyes will be on Reese, in particular. Despite being the second player on the Sky’s draft board, Reese has become one of the biggest names in women’s basketball. She took down Caitlin Clark to win a National Championship two seasons ago with LSU, building a reputation for her hard-nosed defense, explosive athleticism, and infectious personality. Proving she can be the face this franchise needs after trading fan-favorite Kahleah Copper begins tonight.
Reese could also draw quite the fun matchup against Lynx All-Star Napheesa Collier. The forward finished fourth in MVP voting last season and earned a spot on the All-WNBA First Team. A versatile two-way force, Collier could be a great test for Reese on certain possessions tonight.
Still, the Sky injury report is far from clean. Veterans Isabelle Harrison, Diamond DeShields, and Brianna Turner are all questionable for this evening. Star guard Marina Mabrey is also questionable due to a toe injury. As exciting as the rookie talent on this team is, Mabrey is very well in line to be this team’s leading scorer and best player. The 27-year-old is one of the WNBA’s best shooters and will surely take on an even bigger role with Copper out of the picture.
The Sky will tip off against the Lynx tonight at 7:00 p.m. CT. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find whether or not the game will be streamed anywhere, which totally stinks (it doesn’t even say it’ll be on WNBA league pass!). I’ll keep an eye out, but be sure to follow the Sky’s social media pages. I’m sure they’ll be posting highlights.
