NBA Notes: Big Extensions, Clearing Cap Space, Free Agency Rumors, More

The NBA Draft is over and free agency begins in just two days on June 30th. There has a lot of action going on around the NBA as teams gear up to shuffle their rosters when free agency hits.

Let’s take a look at a few of the latest happenings and rumors with some NBA Notes!

  • Just days after the Knicks extended OG Anunoby, the Raptors have locked up a huge part of the return they got for him. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Quickley and the Raptors have agreed to a five-year, $175 million extension to keep him in Toronto. Quickley had a really nice half-season with the Raptors averaging 18.6 points per over his 38 games there and shot 39.5 percent from beyond the arc. It wasn’t likely the Raptors would let such a big part of the Anunoby return get away, but I’m sure they’re happy he’s officially back in the fold and one of their building blocks for the long term.
  • It’s cap dump season! The Mavericks are up against the salary cap and have begun clearing room so they can tweak their roster after last year’s NBA Finals loss. Dallas shipped Tim Hardaway Jr and his $16.1 million cap hit to Detroit along with a pair of second-round picks in exchange for Quentin Grimes. Grimes comes with a $4.2 million cap hit, so Dallas clears a little bit of space with this move. Detroit currently is projected to have the most amount of cap space of any team this offseason, so using their cap space to stockpile future assets is a smart move.
  • In a similar trade, the Hornets agreed to acquire veteran guard Reggie Jackson from the Denver Nuggets. In exchange for the Hornets taking on Jackson’s $5.2 million cap hit, the Nuggets are also sending along three unprotected second-round picks to Charlotte, as well. So just as Detroit did, the Hornets are using their cap flexibility to pick up some future picks.
  • The Warriors and Chris Paul have agreed to move back the date that Paul’s $30 million contract guarantee kicks in, per Woj. That deadline was today, but the Warriors are likely looking to move Chris Paul and his salary. The agreement to hold off on the decision gives Golden State a little bit more time to try and find a taker for Paul’s salary. The Warriors will in all likelihood have to attach assets to Paul in order to move him, but given that the 39-year-old guard’s contract expires at the end of next season, there is a decent chance they’ll be able to find a dance partner.
  • NBA Notes: Where will Klay Thompson end up

  • Let’s stick with the Warriors. According to NBA Insiders Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Klay Thompson has a market coming together and some contenders are interested. They expect the Philadelphia 76ers and their loads of cap space to be interested in the veteran sharpshooter, and the Denver Nuggets could be involved when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope officially hits free agency, too. It does seem like Thompson’s preferred choice would be to finish his career in The Bay, but the Warriors will have a tough time compensating him with what teams on the open market can offer. The closer we get to June 30, the more it seems like Klay could be moving on. Thompson isn’t what he used to be, but in the right situation where he’s not asked to do too much, he might be able to still contribute to a winner.
  • Speaking of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Shams Charnia of The Athletic is reporting that he will decline his $15.4 million player option for next season and hit free agency. Caldwell-Pope will be one of the top wings on the market and could command significant interest in free agency. Teams like the Sixers, Magic, and Spurs all are teams with a bunch of cap space who could use Caldwell-Pope’s championship experience and shooting ability. The Bulls were oddly linked to him earlier in the offseason, but that rumor has died down quite a bit.
  • Kentavious Caldwell-Pope might be on his way out of Denver, but Jamal Murray is close to sticking around for the long term! The Nuggets are close to an agreement with their star guard on a four-year max contract worth $209 million. This deal is pretty much a no-brainer for each side. Murray was a huge part of the Nuggets’ championship run as the Robin to Nikola Jokic’s Batman and has hit some insanely clutch shots over his postseason career.
  • The Clippers and Paul George appear like they could be ready for a breakup. George has been pretty insistent on a four-year deal, but LA doesn’t seem to want to go that far for the 34-year-old forward. If the Clippers won’t go to four years, they’re pretty much saying they’re ok with losing him. If George does hit the market, the Warriors have been linked to him as of the last few days. That would have to be via sign-and-trade to make the cap space work, but Golden State is expected to be aggressive in building a contender around Steph Curry. George is not only the biggest name on the market but also a nice fit for the Warriors.
  • According to The Athletic, the Knicks are potentially looking to move center Mitchell Robinson. Robinson was injured for much of last year and played in just 31 games for New York. In those games, he did manage to grab 8.5 rebounds per game and provide a lot on the defensive end. However, with the Knicks adding Mikal Bridges and paying OG Anunoby big money, they’ll have to try to move out a few pieces to clear up their cap sheet. Robinson is owed $14 million this season and $12 million next season, so he would be a logical piece to try and move. If New York does move Robinson, they’ll be down two centers from last year’s team, as Isaiah Hartenstein is likely headed for free agency.
