Cubs Farm Report | April 16, 2024: Studs and Duds of the Week

Cubs Farm Report

With no minor league action on Mondays, I figured we would use Tuesdays to highlight some of the best and worst performances on the Cubs farm over the last week.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs Studs & Duds of the Week

Luis Vazquez led the Cubs in hits the last seven days, picking up eight hits in 16 at-bats. He’s slashing .500/.579/.688 in that span, with three runs scored and a home run.

Last 7 | 5 G, 16 AB, 8 H, 3 BB, 1 HR

Matt Mervis smashed three home runs for the I-Cubs last week. During that stretch, Mervis added five runs batted in, but it’s been a real true outcome week for him with five hits (three of which left the park) and eight strikeouts in 16 at-bats.

Last 7 | 4 G, 16 AB, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 1.327 OPS, 8 K

Hayden Wesneski made one appearance in a week to forget for Iowa pitching as a unit. He tossed four and a third scoreless innings while allowing only three hits. He struck out four of the hitters he faced and walked one last week.

Last 7 | 4.1 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 0.92 WHIP

Pete Crow-Armstrong had a brutal week at the dish, racking up 11 strikeouts in 19 at-bats for Iowa. PCA’s two hits and zero walks, to go along with the strikeouts, made for a concerning week for the Cubs’ top-hitting prospect.

Last 7 | 4 G, 19 AB, .210 OPS, 11 K, 0 BB, 2 H

Owen Caissie didn’t have the same strikeout issue that Crow-Armstrong had this past week, but he was equally ineffective at the dish, slashing .125/.222/.188 over his last seven days.

Last 7 | 4 G, 16 AB, 2 H, 4 K, .410 OPS

Riley Thompson allowed opponents a sizzling .400 batting average in five innings of work over two appearances last week.

Last 7 | 2 G, 5.0 IP, 12 H, 5 ER, 3 BB

Double-A Tennessee Smokies Studs & Duds of the Week

Matt Shaw had a heck of a week for the Tennessee Smokies, hitting two home runs and collecting six hits in five games. He also drew four walks, hit a triple, and drove in three runs last week.

Last 7 | 5 G, 15 AB, 1.483 OPS, 2 HR

Kevin Alcantara went hitless in 17 at-bats last week for the Smokies, racking up seven strikeouts in the process. Alcantara has no hits in 26 at-bats this season and a .103 OPS for the Smokies.

Last 7 | 5 G, 17 AB, 0 H, 7 K, 3 BB

Cade Horton allowed one run on four hits and struck out four in his lone appearance for the Smokies last week.

Last 7 | 1 G, 4.0 IP, 4 K, 0 BB, 1 ER, 4 H

Connor Noland struck out eight of the hitters he faced in his four innings of work last week for Tennessee.

Last 7 | 1 G, 4.0 IP, 8 K, 1 BB, 1 ER, 4 H

High-A South Bend Cubs Studs & Duds of the Week

Jefferson Rojas led the South Bend Cubs at the plate last week, picking up nine hits in 18 at-bats, hitting a home run, and driving in five runs in four games. Rojas only struck out once in that span and also stole two bases for South Bend. Rojas has two home runs, seven RBI, and a .894 OPS in 35 at-bats this season.

Last 7 | 4 G, 18 AB, 9 H, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 SB, 1 K, 1.278 OPS

Brett Bateman picked up three hits in 16 at-bats and struck out seven times for the South Bend Cubs last week.

Last 7 | 4 G, 16 AB, 7 K, 3 H, .629 OPS

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans Studs & Duds of the Week

Reginald Preciado was red-hot last week for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, racking up 11 hits in 25 at-bats over five games. Preciado also stole three bases, drove in four runs, and scored five times.

Last 7 | 5 G, 25 AB, 11 H, 5 R, 3 SB, .462 OBP

Drew Bowser had one hit and six strikeouts in 16 trips to the plate for the Pelicans last week.

Last 7 | 4 G, 16 AB, 1 H, 6 K, .126 OPS

Nick Dean was lights-out last week, racking up 8 strikeouts in three and a third innings of work for the Pelicans in his lone appearance.

Last 7 | 1 G, 3.1 IP, 8 K, 1 BB, 1 ER, 2 H
