Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 7, Astros 2 – April 23, 2024

Well there was one big thing not to like about tonight’s game – Cody Bellinger was lifted with a right rib contusion after colliding with the outfield wall – and about a million things that were great. And since we deserve great things, let’s set Bellinger aside as a tomorrow-problem, and just enjoy all the wonderful stuff about tonight’s game.

  • Ian Happ came back healthy, rocking a LOOOOONG double and taking a walk.
  • Cody Bellinger hit his fifth homer of the season.
  • Mike Tauchman went oppo not once, but TWICE.
  • Miguel Amaya reached base three times and continues to look great.
  • Ben Brown had a clean 1-2-3 inning of relief.
  • And because the Cubs added on some insurance runs, Yency Almonte was able to clean up the 8th inning and shut it down in the 9th, saving much of the Cubs bullpen.
  • Of course, the absolute best part of tonight’s game was Jordan Wicks. The Cubs young left-hander didn’t just dominate, and he didn’t just dominate for six FULL innings (yeeeeeessss). He dominated for six full innings against the third best offense in MLB vs lefties. That is HUGE. He just keeps taking step after step after step forward this year, and impressing every second of the way.

Great win tonight, and a good way to kick off a series that ends with Justin Verlander on the mound. Go Cubs. Goodnight.
