I know what you’re thinking – what the heck is this basketball junkie doing over here on our turf!? He normally only shows up when he accidentally puts his Bulls articles in the wrong category!
I need a little palate cleanser after that disgusting Bulls season. Fortunately, Michael also needs a little bit of help with minor-league coverage, so I’m going to lend a hand in that department over the next few months! I know I’m not starting in Triple-AAA ball like our old friend Bryan, but I hope that you’ll all bear with me as I try to move up the farm system. I’m a lifelong Cubs obsessor like the rest of ya, so let’s have some fun!
Speaking of which, what’s more fun than an 18-year-old on a league-long hitting streak? The South Bend Cubs’ Jefferson Rojas has been on quite the tear to begin the season. He improved his hitting streak to nine-straight games this past weekend against Miami, giving him the longest active streak in High-A baseball.
Even more impressive, Rojas has recorded at least two hits in six of those nine games, which included a four-hit night back on April 10. We’re now looking at 17 hits over these last nine games with an OPS 1.014 and .415 batting average!
Rojas – unsurprisingly – now leads the South Bend Cubs in hits this season, seven more than outfielder Brett Bateman. He’s also one of only five players in the Midwest League with 19 hits on the scorecard thus far. I’d also be remiss not to mention his 9.5 percent K% over this nine-game hitting streak. Contact has become the name of the game for the infielder, which is a trend you love to see right out of the gate. And it’s not like there’s no power, either: Rojas has two doubles, a triple, and a homer over this nine-game stretch.
Of course, I say all that also recognizing that it’s extremely early. This hitting streak isn’t going to continue forever, and Rojas still has a long way to go. But as far as strong starts go, we aren’t seeing much stronger than this across the farm system. Let’s hope the top 10 Cubs prospect can keep it up!
