2024 Travelers Championship Tee Times – TPC River Highlands, our track for this week, may not be as grueling as the U.S. Open’s Pinehurst No. 2, but it’s no walk in the park. This course demands a strategic game plan and precision, making it a unique challenge for this week’s field.
The 2024 Travelers Championship brings us to the last Pete Dye course of the season. The par-70 layout stretches out to 6,835 yards from the tips, the third-shortest course on Tour this season. In past years, we’ve seen a wide array of skill sets show up to Cromwell, Connecticut, and win, which is what Pete Dye sets out to do in all of his designs. Play the best for four days, and you win. Unlike the Memorial signature event a few weeks ago, the Travelers is a no-cut event. After Rory McIlroy’s Monday withdrawal, we’re down to a 71-man field.
As the field arrives in Cromwell this week, they’ll discover a course that has undergone some significant changes. These ‘competitive enhancements’ were implemented in response to last year’s low scoring and Rory McIlroy’s comments about the layout’s obsolescence due to technology. While the course’s length remains the same, six holes have experienced substantial alterations.
This week’s agronomy features 4-plus inch Bluegrass/Fescue rough and a Bentgrass/Poa annua mixture on the greens and fairways. Numerous lakes and ponds enhance the course’s beauty, although water comes into play only on five holes. In true Pete Dye fashion, the course, particularly on the back nine, tempts players to take shots over these water hazards. The penal rough is the course’s primary defense, forcing players who stray off the fairway to layup instead of going for the green with their approach shot.
It has one of the lowest average driving distances on Tour, at only 284 yards. With fairways being the 10th most narrow and many holes being tree-lined doglegs, many players club down and use less-than-driver from the tee. Perhaps the bigger reason players club down is some of the most penal rough, which has grown to 4+ inches long for this week.
To prevent a complete birdie-fest, the pin positions on the greens are typically in more challenging locations. A Pete Dye course is not just going to give away birdies. Many of the green complexes are also angled away from the hole’s directional path.
The green surfaces combine “northeastern” Poa annua and bentgrass. This is not the bumpy, inconsistent “west coast” Poa often complained about out west.
