Exploring Potential Fits for the Detroit Tigers in the 1st Round of the 2024 MLB Draft
The Detroit Tigers are picking 11th in the 2024 MLB Draft, and we’ve got some new mock drafts from some big names in the industry today. Let’s start with Keith Law’s latest mock draft at The Athletic, where he has the Tigers taking high-ceiling prep shortstop Konnor Griffin at No. 11.
Griffin is labeled as the high-ceiling, high-risk player in the draft, and where he might be taken has been all over the place. Law mentions him as a realistic option for the Cleveland Guardians at No. 1 on an underslot deal in this mock, and I’ve seen him mocked to pretty much every other team in the middle of the top ten picks and beyond.
Law also says that prep shortstop Bryce Rainer and Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery are realistic options for the Tigers at No. 11.
ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel also released his second mock draft today. In it, McDaniel has the Tigers selecting southpaw Cam Caminiti out of Saguaro (AZ) High School.
“Detroit is considering all player demographics here and seems to be primed to jump on any player who slips to this pick as opposed to targeting a certain type. Caminiti (cousin of Ken) should go in the next few picks if he doesn’t go here, and I think Griffin would also get a long look if he makes it to this pick. Kurtz, Tibbs, and Yesavage also fit depending on where Detroit leans in terms of price and risk profile. It seems prep 3B Chase Harlan would be the choice for the Tigers’ next pick if he’s still available.”
McDaniel’s new mock is a two-rounder, and he has the Tigers taking prep third-baseman Chase Harlan at No. 49
Jim Callis also has the Tigers taking Konnor Griffin in his latest mock draft at MLB.com.
“He has the best all-around tools and highest upside in the draft as a potential 30-30 guy who could be a plus shortstop or Gold Glove center fielder, though some clubs worry about how well his swing will play at the big league level. Other Tigers possibilities include another top-10 talent who drops, as well as Arizona prep left-hander Cam Caminiti and Yesavage.”
Callis’ partner at MLB.com agrees with Kiley McDaniels and has the Tigers taking Cam Caminiti at No. 11.
“While they might entertain one of the hitters already off the board should they still be available, there has been more talk about arms here, with Caminiti, the top prep lefty in the class, getting the nod over a college pitcher like Trey Yesavage from East Carolina.”
