Miami Dolphins 3-Round Mock Draft: Exploring Potential Strong Picks to Bolster the Defense

*Before we get into this “three-round” mock draft, it’s important to know that the Miami Dolphins forfeited their third-round pick and a first-rounder in 2023 for violating the league’s tampering rules.

The Miami Dolphins have gotten close to reclaiming a spot atop the AFC East but fell a tad short again in 2023. They punched a postseason ticket for a second straight year under Head Coach Mike McDaniel but eventually lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 26–7 in one of the coldest games in NFL history. This Dolphins team is certainly heading in the right direction, but just need a few key players to get there, and they can add that in this year’s NFL Draft.

The Dolphins have a first-round pick for the first time in three seasons and should have plenty of interesting options with the 21st overall selection. They have just six picks overall in this year’s draft and this mock draft covers two of those selections as we head into Thursday night’s event.

Below is a breakdown of a 2024 NFL Mock Draft for the Miami Dolphins, using the PFF Mock Draft simulator, focusing on the first two rounds since Miami is without a third-round selection:

Round 1, Pick 21: JC Latham (OT) University of Alabama

The Dolphins have some decent tackles on the roster but depth is a concern and salary cap issues forced them to change things up a bit this offseason. At 6’8″ and 335 lbs, Latham is massive as an o-lineman and is a dominant force in the run game. He started for two seasons at right tackle for Alabama but has the potential to play either tackle or switch to guard in the NFL.

Latham would upgrade the offensive line, providing much-needed stability for the running game and a solid shield for Tua Tagovailoa.

Alternative Mock Draft Picks at No. 21: Jer’Zhan Newton (DI) University of Illinois, Jared Verse (EDGE) Florida State University, Jackson Powers-Johnson (C/G) University of Oregon, Graham Barton (C) Duke University, Amarius Mims (OT), University of Georgia

Round 2, Pick 55: Javon Bullard (Safety) University of Georgia

Jordan Poyer is 33 years old, Jevon Holland is in the final year of his contract, and the Dolphins lost DeShon Elliot and Brandon Jones to free agency. Miami needs help at the safety position for depth right away and as a starter in the future.

Bullard is a smart football player with a PFF ranking of 47 overall and the second-highest-graded safety in this year’s draft class. The former Bulldog would be a solid fit for the Dolphins’ secondary.

Alternative Mock Draft Picks at No. 55: T’Vondre Sweat (DT) University of Texas, Christian Haynes (G) University of Connecticut, Maason Smith (DT) Louisiana State University, Ja’Tavion Sanders (TE) University of Texas, Kris Jenkins (DI), University of Michigan
