2024 Los Angeles Chargers Big Board: Potential First-Round Fits Including Wide Receiver & Tackle

The 2024 NFL Draft is upon us, and the Los Angeles Chargers hold the coveted fifth overall pick. With a young, dynamic quarterback in Justin Herbert, the Chargers are poised to make a serious playoff run. But to take that next step, they’ll need to address some key needs in the draft. Will they go for a game-changing wide receiver to complement their aerial attack? Or will they prioritize shoring up the offensive line to protect their franchise QB? Let’s dive into the potential first-round options facing General Manager Joe Hortiz and the Chargers as they gear up for the draft.

Los Angeles Chargers NFL Draft Needs

The Los Angeles Chargers have a few key areas they’d like to address in the upcoming NFL Draft. Here’s a breakdown of their biggest needs:

Wide Receiver: With the departures of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, the Chargers lack a true number-one receiving option. This makes finding a talented wideout a top priority.

Offensive Line (Right Tackle): While they have a stud left tackle in Rashawn Slater, the right tackle position needs an upgrade. Keeping Justin Herbert upright is crucial for his development and overall team success.

Running Back (depth): Austin Ekeler is a fantastic back, but adding depth and a potential long-term solution will solidify the Chargers’ running game.

Cornerback: The secondary needs a boost after a shaky season. Finding a reliable cornerback who can lock down opposing receivers is a priority.

Defensive Tackle (depth): While not the most glaring need, adding depth at defensive tackle will provide more flexibility and keep the defensive line fresh.

Sitting atop the Chargers’ big board for the 5th pick in the NFL Draft has to be one of the elite wide receivers available this year. Primarily, Marvin Harrison Jr. who if available when the Chargers are on the clock is expected to be drafted by the Bolts according to numerous Chargers Mock Drafts. Although unlikely, they could go with a different receiver, grab the best available offensive tackle, or trade down for more assets and take the best available player. Let’s take a look at the top options for the Chargers with their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Chargers 7-Round Mock Draft

Marvin Harrison Jr. – Wide Receiver, Ohio State

The son of NFL legend Marvin Harrison Sr. is poised to follow in his father’s footsteps. A consensus All-American at Ohio State, Harrison Jr. boasts an ideal frame (6’4″, 205 lbs) and exceptional route-running ability. He consistently creates separation with his technique, snatches passes with reliable hands and excels in contested catches. While some question his deep speed, his overall skillset makes him the top wide receiver prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s a potential game-changer who would immediately bolster the Chargers’ passing attack.

Malik Nabers – Wide Receiver, LSU

Nabors rewrote the Tigers’ record book during his college career. He finished with a school-record 3,003 receiving yards, capped by a dominant 2023 season where he led the FBS in receiving yards (1,569) and earned unanimous All-American honors. Nabers possesses a well-rounded skillset with a good blend of size (6’0″, 190 lbs) and speed (4.44 40-yard dash). He excels at finding soft spots in coverage and showcases impressive leaping ability. While he might not be the most physical receiver, his route running and YAC (yards after catch) ability make him a dangerous offensive weapon.

Chargers First-Round Mock Draft

Joe Alt – Offensive tackle, Notre Dame

He has quickly risen through the ranks to become a top prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite playing tight end in high school, Alt transitioned seamlessly to tackle in college, showcasing impressive athleticism for his size (6’7″, 322 lbs). He’s known for his quick feet and ability to shut down pass rushers, allowing quarterbacks ample time to operate. Alt’s background as a tight end also translates to a well-developed understanding of pass sets and zone-blocking schemes. A two-time All-American, Alt is a polished blocker with the potential to be a pillar on the outside of any offensive line.

Brock Bowers – Tight End, Georgia

Bower is a rare breed. Listed at 6’4″ and 225 lbs, he possesses a unique blend of size, speed (4.5 40-yard dash), and route-running savvy. This allows him to line up in various formations, creating matchup problems for defenses. He can overpower defenders with his physicality in the red zone but also stretch the field with his speed and leaping ability. Bowers is a nightmare after the catch, racking up yards with his explosiveness and elusiveness.  His well-rounded skillset makes him a surefire first-round pick and a player who could fit well in the Chargers’ new offensive game plan.
