Cubs vs Padres — One month. The Chicago Cubs have just about one month to get this ship headed in the right direction before the trade deadline plans get laid. Unfortunately, that month starts with a West Coast trip including four against the Padres, three against the Giants, and three more against the Angels.
If you want to bright side it, you might note that the Padres are not playing up to expectations while the Giants and Angels are good not great teams. But that doesn’t make me feel much better, not with Justin Steele’s status still up in the air, with Cody Bellinger still on the IL, and with Codi Heuer still in Iowa.
Hey, speaking of Codi Heuer, let’s go, brother:
We’ll dive deeper into the probably starters throughout the weekend — and you can otherwise see the matchup details down below. But here are a few highlights:
(1) The Cubs will get two lefties in this series, Blake Snell and Ryan Weathers, which is probably good news. They tend to perform better against lefties. Though that might mean only two starts for Matt Mervis, who’s REALLY struggled against lefties in his very small sample.
(2) The Cubs are getting Yu Darvish, who’s been on an absolutely brutal stretch since the end of April (6 starts, 32.2 IP): 5.79 ERA. That said, I don’t think anyone in Chicago would bet against him. We know how good he can be.
(3) And finally, tonight, the Cubs are getting Michael Wacha, whom they used to destroy, but who also handled them just fine at Wrigley Field back at the end of April.
All right. Go Cubs. Time to get back on track.
