The Detroit Lions have been busy in recent weeks securing their core after a run to the NFC title game last season. Jared Goff became the latest player to get a new deal in Detroit, and he became the highest-paid Lion in franchise history.
According to Adam Schefter, Goff’s new deal with the Lions is a four-year deal worth $212 million and includes $170 million in guaranteed money. The AAV on the deal is $53 million per season, which ranks second only to Joe Burrow in that respect. Burrow is making $55 million per season.
Jared Goff’s Extension was a Priority for the Lions
This deal comes two weeks after the Lions secured long-term deals with Penei Sewell and Amon-Ra St. Brown. On Thursday, it was reported that the attention had shifted to the quarterback position for the Detroit Lions in the wake of those deals. Goff has rejuvenated his career with the team, transforming from a previously disappointing first-overall pick in Los Angeles to a reliable quarterback in Detroit.
“He’s earned an extension,” Lions General Manager Brad Holmes said Thursday during an appearance on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit. “It’s important; it’s a high priority for us. Both sides are working really, really hard. These things just take time.”
Last season, Jared Goff played an instrumental role in leading the Lions to a division title after 30 years. He had an exceptional season, helping the team win two playoff games. In the 2020 season, he finished second in the NFL for passing yards, with 4,575 yards, and fourth in touchdown passes, with 30 touchdowns.
Since he joined the Lions as part of the trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, Goff has thrown for the fourth-most yards (12,258) and seventh-most touchdowns (78) of any quarterback in the NFL over that stretch.
