It Ain’t a Good Feeling, Morel’s Blast, Diaz Sticky, Martinez PED, and Other Cubs Bullets

Going outside without immediately becoming drenched in sweat. Yeah baby. Today is a win.

Well, for me, I mean. I can’t speak for the Cubs’ prospects in San Francisco tonight …

  • As for last night … another loss. Another series loss. Another almost entirely boring loss. I mean, I guess in some ways that’s better than the heart-wrenching, throw-your-remote-in-rage kind of loss? But it’s just an added layer of frustration that it’s hard to even find this team entertaining right now. That’s a serious problem when you are in the entertainment business.
  • To that point, whether it’s factually accurate or not if you scrub the data, it certainly FEELS like Cliff Floyd is right (and the feel is what matters if you’re talking about entertainment):
  • One nice moment from the game was Christopher Morel’s second straight game with a homer:
  • Hopefully this is the start of a nice hot streak for Morel, whose slump hasn’t been entirely bad luck, but he also certainly hasn’t been getting much help from the BABIP gods. Happy 25th birthday, by the way, to Morel!
  • The other nice moment from last night’s game was a funny one, even if it didn’t wind up mattering at all. Struggling New York Mets closer was ejected before throwing a pitch due to the presence of sticky stuff on his hand:
  • Oh come on, was it really that obviou–:
  • YUP! Not a lot of effort to hide it there. I’m not sure why this one is even remotely controversial. Even if it weren’t pine tar or spider tack or whatever, you are reminded that pitchers are not allowed to create extreme stickiness using rosin (and rubbing alcohol, for example) before coming into the game or between innings.
  • Craig Counsell on the loss, Javier Assad’s disappointing performance, the weak home stand, and more:
  • From the Sun-Times, presented without comment:
  • ‘Nico Hoerner is 5-for-35 since June 14. Counsell doesn’t think it’s because of the broken bone in his right wrist that Hoerner suffered when he was hit by Hunter Greene’s 96.5 mph fastball on June 6.

“I don’t think we know for sure, but I don’t think he would use that, either,” Counsell said. “He’s just kind of going through a stretch since he’s come back [where he’s] just not swinging it well.”’

  • The Blue Jays just suffered a big blow to their efforts to make a push internally:
  • On a positive note, it seems like maybe Cubs outfield prospect Ezequiel Pagan is going to be OK after being taken by ambulance to the hospital following a collision with Matt Shaw:
