Around the NHL: Buyouts Beginning, Active Phones, 4 Nations Face-Off Rosters, More

On Draft Day there’s a lot of smoke around the NHL. Here’s what we’re hearing:

  • The Flyers announced they will buy out the final year of Cam Atkinson’s contract. He’s 35 and has a $5.875M cap hit for the 2024-25 season. Atkinson scored 13 goals in 70 games last year after scoring 23 in 73 games the previous season.
  • The Dallas Stars also announced a buy out on Friday. They’re walking away from the final year of Ryan Suter’s contract. Suter, 39, appeared in all 82 regular-season games for Dallas this past season.
  • Steven Stamkos is going to hit the market on July 1. His agent told Pierre LeBrun that they haven’t been able to get a deal done for him to stay in Tampa — yet. This could be a very interesting name to watch. He’s still got a lot of game left.
  • The Los Angeles Kings have already made one blockbuster trade, sending Pierre-Luc Dubois to Washington. It sounds like they aren’t done dealing. My guy, Dennis Bernstein, is reporting the Kings are 50/50 to move down in the first round on Friday night and that they’re actively working the phones.
  • Elliotte Friedman is reporting Sam Reinhart is going to stay in Florida. Not a huge surprise here; he’s happy, a champion and in a great situation. With no state income tax, why not?
  • The NHL and NHLPA announced the initial rosters for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off. No Blackhawks players were named. That shouldn’t come as a shock.
