New Bears QBs Coach Kerry Joseph Shares What He’s Looking for in a Quarterback

If you were wondering what the future of the Chicago Bears quarterback position will look like, then look no further than Kerry Joseph.

Joseph, who was recently hired as the Bears’ new QBs coach, gave CHGO’s Nicholas Moreano a great answer to a question about what he is looking for in the quarterbacks putting in work at the Senior Bowl. And in doing so, opens the door for speculation about how the team will move forward in the near future at the position:

“Arm talent, accuracy, you know. Delivery quickness, physicality, toughness, swagger. You got to have a little swag playing the quarterback position, and when I say that, I mean confidence. You got to have confidence, and I like to say arrogance, but arrogance to me, all it is confidence under control.”

I can see why folks are going to make a connection and see this as a sign that the Bears are totally, definitely, and surely going to draft USC quarterback Caleb Williams. But who’s to say Joseph isn’t describing Justin Fields? Or even Tyson Bagent. OK, maybe that last name was dropped purely for the giggles.

It’s nice to hear a new voice discuss Bears quarterbacks

One thing I’m hoping to see from this new collection of Bears offensive coaches is if they’ll be a little more open with information than prior regimes. To be clear, I’m not looking for state secrets. I don’t need Chicago’s coaches to be spilling the beans on everything. But what I would like from the new Bears assistants is a little bit of transparency, accountability, and honesty. Not everything needs to be treated like a huge secret. My hope is that Kerry Joseph laying out what he is looking for in a quarterback is just the first change we’ll see from the new-look Bears offense.

Circling back, Joseph’s words intrigue me. And I wonder if there is a quarterback prospect at the Senior Bowl who is a developmental project who checks some of the boxes above. And because you care, here are the Senior Bowl quarterbacks:

  • Bo Nix, Oregon
  • Sam Hartman, Notre Dame
  • Michael Penix Jr., Washington
  • Spencer Rattler, South Carolina
  • Michael Pratt, Tulane
  • Carter Bradley, South Alabama
  • While we can discuss the Caleb vs. Justin debate until the cows come home, I feel as if there is a more practical discussion to be had about re-shaping the quarterbacks’ room behind QB1. With a new offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and passing game coordinator in the fold, I am curious to see how this position group comes together — especially since we know now what new Bears QBs Coach Kerry Joseph is looking for out of the position.
