While Chicago Bears fans are trying to get used to Caleb Williams, players are trying to get acclimated to their new quarterback. Following the getting-to-know-you process from afar has been fun. And the latest story gave me a good chuckle.
Tight end Cole Kmet shared a story about the competitive Caleb Williams possesses, which apparently showed up while the two were having golf-related shenanigans.
As Kmet tells it, Caleb’s competitiveness popped up during a recent team outing at Topgolf. Cole and Caleb were in a tight competition, but Williams didn’t want to concede — even as the facility was preparing to close down for the evening. Williams wanted to end the night with a win so badly that he and the Bears were able to successfully talk the Topgolf team into letting them finish their game. Kmet still took home a win (sorry, rookie!), but I think the more important nugget from that story is that Williams’ teammates got an inkling of what he is about as a competitor.
Because if Caleb Williams is taking a night at Topgolf that seriously, then one can only imagine how badly he’ll want to win football games.
I’m looking forward to seeing how Cole Kmet and Caleb Williams build their relationship
Cole Kmet had a breakout season in 2023. Remember when he played Week 18 against the Green Bay Packers with a broken forearm? Yeah, that was a thing that happened. Even still … the Notre Dame product set new career bests in catches (73) and receiving yards (719) while catching passes from Justin Fields. Kmet proved to be quite the asset for the Bears offense last year, and a top target for the former QB1.
One of my favorite facts about the 2023 Bears is that Fields had a 115.4 passer rating when targeting Kmet. Fields completed 52 of 65 passes when throwing Kmet’s way, had a 4-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and averaged 8.3 yards per attempt. Overall, I think those numbers speaks for how well Kmet did in getting open and making himself available for Fields. It also speaks to how comfortable Fields was throwing to his tight end. Whether it was over the middle or as an outlet, Kmet and Fields looked to be on the same page. I hope that can happen with Caleb Williams — and preferably soon.
