The 2024 NL MVP race took a hit when Mookie Betts broke his wrist. Since then, Dodger teammates Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman have picked up the slack and lead the odds. Let’s look at the latest odds, potential sleepers, and more as the MLB season gets close to the ASG.

Can Ohtani Win as a DH?

(Ohtani leads the league in HR and OPS. Photo: Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports)

We keep asking the question. Can a primary DH win the MVP? It has never been done but Shohei Ohtani is making a great case for the award. The guy is a monster at the plate. He is hitting .316 with 26 homers, 62 RBI, and an OPS of 1.034. He leads the NL in runs, hits, average, homers, total bases, slugging, OPS, and WAR.

It will be very much deserved if he does win. Now, if you are looking to bet on Ohtani, it’s not the best value. He has odds of -230. You have to bet more to get a decent payout. That means there is quite a bit of risk in it for you. A $230 bet would win just $100.

Freddie Freeman Consistent as Always

Well, Freddie Freeman is doing what Freddie Freeman does. He is putting up another great season. Mr. Consistent just gets it done every year. Freeman is hitting .296 with 12 homers and 52 RBI. He has an OPS of .899 and just continues to get the job done.

While his odds are nice at +750, the odds of him beating out Ohtani are not that great. He will really have to hit for a lot of power in the second half of the season or win a batting title. Even then, Ohtani will be hard to knock off the top spot.

What About Harper and Ozuna?

(A hamstring injury will keep Harper out 10 days. Photo: Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports)

Bryce Harper was heating up and putting together some big numbers before a hamstring injury last week. It’s going to knock him out for 10 days leading right up to this year’s All-Star Game. Harper is hitting .303 with 20 homers and 58 RBI. He also has an OPS of .981.

While he might miss some time, Harper has value at +850 because he has shown how hot he can get at the end of the season. He loves August and hits a career-best .303 during that month. He’s a two-time MVP and is playing on one of the best teams in the NL. If he gets healthy after the break, Harper will be in the discussion for NL MVP.

Marcell Ozuna is second in the NL in homers and OPS but he is being overshadowed greatly by Ohtani. Ozuna is on pace for a huge year with 41 homers and 132 RBI along with 180 hits. The issue is he just won’t get the buzz Bryce Harper and Shohei Ohtani are getting. So while +1600 seems exciting, he just doesn’t have that good of a shot to win the NL MVP unless injuries decimate Ohtani or Harper down the stretch.
