Tarik Skubal is the Favorite
Tarik Skubal has been great for the Detroit Tigers this season sporting a 9-3 record with an ERA of 2.32. He is striking out 10.4 batters per nine and has an absurd WHIP of 0.94. Skubal has 11 quality starts of his 16 this season and has thrown 97.0 innings while surrendering just 8 homers.
The Tigers have not been as good as they probably thought they would be this year. They would be crazy to think about trading Skubal but you never know what could happen in late July.
Skubal is +190 which means a $100 bet would win $190. Whatever you bet, if he wins the award, you would win 1.9 times that amount.
Seth Lugo Putting Up Great Numbers
Seth Lugo is +1900 and climbing the ranks. This is a pretty good value considering it’s 19 to 1. You bet $100 and you would win $1,900 if he were to win the Cy Young.
Lugo has been great this year with an 11-2 record and a 2.17 ERA. He is striking out 8.1 batters per nine and has a WHIP of 1.03. Also, he leads AL pitchers in WAR at 4.2. The dude could easily find himself holding the Cy Young at the end of the year if he keeps this up.
Corbin Burnes in the Running
Corbin Burnes and the Orioles are having a great season while showing last year was no fluke in Baltimore. They are here to stay and compete in the tough AL East. Burnes is second in the AL in ERA with a 2.28 mark and is 9-3 on the year. He has a WHIP of 1.03 and is striking out 8.4 batters per nine innings.
Burnes has 13 quality starts on the year and has 99 strikeouts compared to 24 walks. Right now, he is +240 to win the award. A $100 bet wins $240. Whatever bet you place, Burnes winning would pay out 2.4 times.
What About Closer Emmanuel Clase?
Could we see a closer win the award this season? Emmanual Clase has been unhittable closing out games for the Cleveland Guardians. He has 25 saves and an ERA of 0.69. And his WHIP is even better at 0.64. Clase is striking out 8.9 batters per nine and has given up just 3 earned runs in 39.1 innings.
Unfortunately, he will likely not be in the running with such great performances out of Skubal, Lugo, and Barnes. It’s very difficult to win a Cy Young as a relief pitcher.
