Zack Wheeler Leads the Way
Wheeler is 9-4 on the season with 13 quality starts in 17 trips to the mound. He has tossed 105.2 innings and is striking out 9.5 batters per nine innings. He has a WHIP of 0.98 and is looking like a worthy winner of the Cy Young.
With odds of +200, you would win two times your wager if you bet on Wheeler and he gets the award at the end of the season. For example, a $1000 bet would win $2000. The payout would be $3000 because you would get back your original stake.
Tyler Glasnow Worth a look
While Tyler Glasnow is sitting with his ERA at 3.23, he is striking out an absurd 11.9 batters per nine. His WHIP is also 0.93 which is second only to Chris Sale who is 0.92. Glasnow is 8-5 and has 11 quality starts on the year out of 17 trips to the mound.
Glasnow wasn’t as good in May or June as he was in April, but he has the talent to get hot. At +600, it’s not a bad value considering you would get 6 times your bet if he ended up winning the award. Glasnow has never won a CY Young and never finished in the top 5 in voting. Will this be the year for him?
While he can be a little erratic, he leads the league with 136 strikeouts and can be dominant when he is on. His best season came last year when he went 10-7 for the Rays.
Chris Sale, Max Fried in Top 5
The top 5 also sees a pair of Atlanta Braves teammates in Chris Sale and Max Fried. Sale is second in odds and for good reason. He’s looking like the Chris Sale of old as he is 10-3 with a 2.79 ERA. He leads the league in WHIP at 0.92. Also, he is striking out 11.3 batters per nine innings.
It’s wild to think that Sale has never won a Cy Young. His best finish was second in 2017 when he was 17-8 for the Red Sox while leading the league in innings, strikeouts, and strikeouts per nine.
Fried is 7-3 with a 2.91 ERA and a WHIP of 1.09. He isn’t striking out nearly as many batters as only guys on this list at 7.9 per nine innings but he has had a strong two months after seeing a 4.02 ERA in April. Fried finished second in Cy Young voting in 2022 after going 14-7 with a 2.48 ERA. He started just 14 games in 2023.
