Bruins, Sens Make a BIG Trade Right Before Game 7

How about a fairly HUGE trade dropping like 20 minutes before the start of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final? The Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators decided to jump the party and make a big deal that involves a prime time goalie and a first-round pick in this week’s NHL Draft.

Um, yeah. Wow.

Ottawa gets their new starting goalie in Linus Ullmark in a deal that costs them a goalie of their own and the Sens’ second pick in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft (No. 25 overall).

What’d the Senators get?

Ullmark was half of arguably the best goalie tandem in the NHL over the past couple seasons. The 30-year-old is entering the final season of a contract that carries a $5M cap hit. With Jeremy Swayman hitting RFA this summer, the Bruins needed to make a decision in net and opted to move the older, more expensive player and give the crease to Swayman.

What’d the Bruins get?

First, they got… their own pick in the first-round of the 2024 NHL Draft back. Boston initially traded that pick to Detroit for Tyler Bertuzzi. The Red Wings sent it to Ottawa in the Alex DeBrincat trade, and now the Sens have sent it back to Boston.

Joonas Korpisalo, 30, appeared in 55 games for the Sens last year. He has four years remaining on his contract that carries a $3M cap hit.

Mark Kastelic, 25, has appeared in 63 and 65 games in the past two seasons with the Senators, respectively, and has produced just 12 goals in that time. He is entering the final year of his contract that carries a $835,000 cap hit.
