Around the NHL: Joshua Signs, Buyout Window Open, Blues Add Julien, Holland Leaves Edmonton, More

It’s the day before the 2024 NHL Draft and the league is buzzing as execs settle into their hotels in Vegas. Teams are looking to wheel and deal with picks floating and veterans being made available as 31 teams chase the Florida Panthers for the 2025 Stanley Cup.

Here’s some of what’s going on around the NHL on Thursday:

  • The first buyout window is now open in the NHL. There are no players on waivers today, though the Dallas Stars reportedly plan to buy out the final season of Ryan Suter’s contract. There are some other names — specifically Jeff Skinner in Buffalo — who are interesting to see if/when they hit the wire to get bought out. We’ll keep an eye on the waiver wire in the next couple days to see if any big names are put out there.
  • One player who could have hit the market on Monday who I really liked as a potential Blackhawks target was Canucks forwards Dakota Joshua. Well, that’s not going to happen. Vancouver basically gave him the money they saved from the trade with the Hawks (whelp). That’s a big raise for Joshua, who scored 18 goals this past season. Good for him.
  • One name of intrigue for Blackhawks fans is another old friend: Teuvo Teravainen. It looks like he’s going to hit the UFA market on Monday, and the Hawks have been floated as a potential destination. After acquiring Ilya Mikheyev on Wednesday night, we’ll see if the Blackhawks make a play for Turbo to help their roster for the next couple years. Teravainen scored 25 goals for the Canes this past season and (gulp, way to make me feel old) he turns 30 on Sept. 11.
  • While we’re talking about Carolina, their new GM is going to have a lot of weight in the coming days on the entire NHL market. He’s got players to trade, guys he needs to re-sign and players he’d like to keep. Pierre LeBrun went deep into what’s coming for the Canes.
  • The St. Louis Blues hired an experienced voice to join their coaching staff on Thursday, announcing Claude Julien will be on Drew Bannister’s staff. They also promoted Steve Ott to an associate coach role.
  • Meanwhile, Ken Holland is walking away from the Oilers. It sounds like he might take his time in making a decision on what — if anything — is next in his career. He’s been the architect of a couple successful teams, so we’ll see if he’s able to sit back and let the market come to him or if it’s time to call it a career.
