Lonzo Ball is taking the high road. Attending Invest Fest in Atlanta this weekend, the Chicago Bulls was asked briefly about his injury status after the recent Stephen A. Smith drama.
Ball didn’t have much to say in response to Smith’s comments. He simply stated that he doesn’t appreciate someone with such a large platform spreading misinformation about his health. But, insisting that’s “besides the point,” Ball stressed that he has every intention to resume his playing career despite the doubts.
“I’m going to play again. The outside news doesn’t bother me … For me, I know what I have to do to get back, and I’m just on a path, doing what I got to do everyday, taking it step by step,” Ball said during a panel discussion (h/t Darnell Mayberry). “I don’t look too far ahead, I know in my near future that I’ll be back on the court for sure.
Look, no one is denying that Ball has an extremely long road ahead of him. I also can’t sit here and say that I’m confident Ball can return to the court in earnest. Yet, at the same time, I’m in no place to say that he can’t. Heck, I also don’t want to bet against the guy! Ball is just 25 years old and a one-of-a-kind talent. I’d love nothing more than for him to get over this hurdle and play the game that he loves – even if it’s not at the level we grew accustomed to before the injury.
Also … what do we expect Ball to say? He is going to exhaust every option to continue working toward his dream. I’m just glad he’s keeping a positive mindset instead of acting dejected. If there is any path toward a full recovery – no matter how small – he’ll need to stay fully motivated to reach it.
