According to The Athletic’s NBA Insider Shams Charania, Netflix and the NBA will be releasing a documentary series following the model of the NFL’s “Quarterback” series.
The five players selected for the first season of the series are LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, and Domantas Sabonis. I think it’s safe to say that is quite the lineup!
The series will be produced by James’ SpringHill Company, Barack Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, and Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions. Manning’s production company was in charge of the “Quarterback” series, so expect the NBA series to feel quite similar.
All in all, I’m not getting my hopes up for this to be some groundbreaking series, but it should be fun. If it’s anything like “Quarterback,” it will likely have some slow spots, but ultimately prove entertaining enough to watch.
I’m also definitely a fan of the players chosen for season one. Give me all of the Jimmy Butler content. He’s amusing, charismatic, and seems like he would fully embrace a series like this. Same thing with LeBron. However you feel about him, this feels like an opportunity he’d embrace, especially if his production company is tied to it.
As for the last three, I’m actually pretty intrigued to get to know more about Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards, and Domantas Sabonis. All three of those players are having really good seasons, and the latter two are a bit under-the-radar personalities playing in Minnesota and Sacramento.
No word yet on when the series will be released, but they have begun taping. I’m very interested to see how it turns out!
