The Chicago Bulls will have a little less wiggle room this offseason.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Torrey Craig has picked up his $2.8 million option for the 2024-25 season. Craig originally signed with the organization last season on a two-year deal worth the veteran minimum.
Torrey Craig Opts In
All things considered, the announcement comes as a pretty big surprise considering the direction of the current team. The Bulls have recently traded for 21-year-old Josh Giddey and drafted 19-year-old Matas Buzelis. Arturas Karnisovas also insinuated that a rebuild is on the horizon in his post-draft media availability.
Craig likely could’ve found himself on a contender for a similar salary, especially considering his winning role-player resume with the Bucks and Suns. The choice makes you wonder if he’s heard something different about the direction of the team OR if he’s simply comfortable in Chicago after an injury-riddled season.
If one thing is for sure, the Bulls can benefit from having Craig around. He’s a savvy veteran who can help show some of the youngsters the ropes. Not to mention, he’ll give Billy Donovan a reliable locker room professional.
Nevertheless, I’m still pretty surprised by the decision. It doesn’t take up too much spending power from a likely retooling team, but I surely thought Craig would want to be in a more competitive environment.
Who knows, maybe he hopes to get traded later on this year.
