Angel Reese’s iconic rookie season continues.
The WNBA officially announced the All-Star rosters on Wednesday, and the Chicago Sky rookie made the cut. Reese had sat seventh in fan voting during the league’s previous voting release on June 21. This put her one spot behind the Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu and one spot ahead of the Aces’ Kelsey Plum.
This is yet another impressive accomplishment to put on Reese’s resume after only 17 games of league action. She most recently became the first player in WNBA history to record 10 straight double-doubles. That’s right, not the only rookie but the only player EVER! This helped earn her Rookie of the Month honors over No. 1 overall pick Caitlin Clark for the month of June.
Reese also joined a prestigious club by becoming just the 4th rookie in league history to have a 15-point, 10-rebound, and 5-steal game. She was the first to do it since Sky champion Candace Parker.
The team may only be 6-11 on the season, but Reese has quickly established herself as the rising star many expected her to be. Her defense and rebounding remain elite skills, while her overpowering offense is starting to catch on.
Reese has averaged 13.3 points, 11.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.5 steals to begin her career. She’s also getting to the free throw line for 5.5 attempts per game.
Angel Reese and Her Fellow All-Stars!
Fan voting accounted for 50 percent of the total tally, while the other 50 percent was split between WNBA players and media. The top 10 players in this voting pool were automatically put on the All-Star roster. Any of those players who also happened to appear on the Team USA roster for the Paris Olympics were put on one All-Star team. The players who aren’t headed overseas were put on the other squad (aka Team USA).
Of course, since 10 players weren’t going to fill a full two teams, the next 36 top vote-getters were given to WNBA head coaches. They proceeded to vote on who they believed was All-Star-worthy to ensure both teams had a complete 12-woman roster.
