It’s been a very long time since the Chicago Cubs have hosted an All-Star Game at Wrigley Field. And if the Cubs don’t get it in 2025, it’s going to be even longer still.
We already know that the 2023 game is tonight in Seattle, the 2024 game is in Arlington and the 2026 game is in Philadelphia.
Today, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed that Wrigley Field is in the mix for 2025, but it’s just one of at least five teams being considered, with Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, and Toronto being the other four.
If length of wait is a predominant factor, then GET ON IT ALREADY. As noted there, and as known by you already, the Cubs haven’t had an All-Star Game at Wrigley Field in 33 years. Baltimore got one 30 years ago. Boston got one 24 years ago. Atlanta got one 23 years ago. Toronto got one 32 years ago. So the Cubs’ wait, among that group, has been the longest.
I get that new ballparks open, and that makes for a good and proper reason to host an All-Star Game, so it’s never going to be 30 venues in 30 years, one each for every team. But the Cubs DID just renovate Wrigley Field, out of which they are never going to move, so that’s as close as they’ll come to having a new venue.
It’s time. It’s past time. That 2025 All-Star Game better be coming to Chicago, and the city better do its part to help encourage MLB to make it happen.
