Sounds Like Carl Edwards Jr. Is Back with the Cubs … Again!

I know I can’t be alone when I say that I was pretty excited when the Cubs signed Carl Edwards Jr. over the offseason, even though it was on a minor league deal with no guarantee we’d actually ever see him in Chicago. The 32-year-old right-hander was a favorite of mine during the Cubs World Series run, and he had actually put together a playable couple seasons for the Nationals these last two years: 3.07 ERA (4.11 FIP) over 93.2 IP.

But near the end of Spring Training, when it became clear that he wasn’t going to break camp with the team, Edwards opted out of his minor league deal and that was that. For then. But today’s a new day, and just like Brett had anticipated/hoped, it seems like the Cubs have actually brought Carl Edwards Jr. back! Again!

Tommy Birch writes for the Des Moines register and is usually all over Iowa Cubs news.

I’m certainly not trying to be HAPPY that Edwards wasn’t able to find a better or big league deal out there on the market, but I am happy to have him back (if that is, indeed, what’s going on here). His 2023 season ended early due to shoulder inflammation, but he tossed 6.2 innings for the Cubs this spring, earning a 1.35 ERA.

If he’s healthy, a return to the Chicago Cubs at some point this season isn’t at all out of the question. And, again, given some of the success he had with the Nationals the last two years, he could even be a contributor. Plus, you can never have too much pitching and he’s just fun to have around. Stay tuned. We’ll see if we get official word any time soon.
