21 Years Ago Today: The Cork Popped

Sammy Sosa Cubs
Sammy Sosa Cubs

It isn’t one of the sunnier Sammy Sosa memories for Cubs fans – in fact, it’s one of the more bizarre moments in the last few decades of baseball – but it’s part of the history.

On this day in 2003, Sosa’s bat cracked in a game against the Rays, and things got crazy.

Sosa, who was suspended for seven games, later attempted to explain the discovered cork away by saying he inadvertently grabbed a batting practice bat by mistake. That bat was corked, Sosa said, because he liked to put on a show for the fans in BP. Few bought it, but it is worth pointing out that later scans of Sosa’s bats – from that season, and seasons prior – did not reveal additional cork.

It’s weird that this seriously troubling bit of cheating took place in that wonderful 2003 season, and you kind of never mentally connect the two things. In fact, I suspect that because it was that year, people talk about it a lot less than they would have otherwise. Really, think about how nuts it was!

Moises Ballesteros Will Do a Lot of Catching Work at Triple-A Iowa, Which Feels Like a Positive Sign

I saw this tweet from Tommy Birch, who covers the Iowa Cubs, and I really liked what I was seeing: https://twitter.com/TommyBirch/status/1805674723063341331 The reason I like that note so much, is that it would be a pretty significant uptick in Moises...

A Great Start and a Great Moment for Kyle Hendricks, and Other Cubs Bullets

Officially a Farewell: Cubs Release Yan Gomes

This was a procedural inevitability once the Cubs designated him for assignment last week, but now it has happened officially: the Cubs have released Yan Gomes. A really great contributor in every phase last year, the soon-to-be 37-year-old catcher seemingly...

The Brewers Are Trading for Dallas Keuchel

I almost appended "in the year 2024" to the end of that headline, but I don't want to get dunked on when it turns out that Dallas Keuchel has got it back. With the Brewers. Because of course that is...
