Oof: Anthony Rizzo Reportedly Fractured His Arm on That Scary Collision at First Base

The Yankees are getting Gerrit Cole back this week, but they’ll lose Anthony Rizzo for a while. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Rizzo has an arm fracture. While the club doesn’t expect Rizzo to need surgery to repair the fracture, he is expected to miss four to six weeks due to the injury.

Rizzo left Sunday’s contest with the Red Sox after this collision at first base:

It appears that Rizzo landed awkwardly on his right arm after the collision and was immediately in severe pain. The collision was between Rizzo and Red Sox reliever Brennan Bernardino, who covered first base and dropped the flip from first baseman Dominic Smith.

Initial Results on Anthony Rizzo’s Arm Were Encouraging, But Follow-Up Results Today Brought Bad News

According to Rosenthal, Rizzo was examined via fluoroscope at Fenway Park on Sunday, and the results came back negative, but the team wanted him to undergo more testing on Monday in New York.

“He’s in some pain, that kind of lower arm, in a number of places,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said last night.

Rizzo was hitting .223 with eight home runs, 28 RBIs, and a .630 OPS through 70 games with the Yankees this season. Also of note, the Cubs will host the Yankees at the beginning of September. So Anthony Rizzo should be back up and running for the late-season homecoming.
