Ian Happ, man. He has come through a LOT lately, homering in some really big moments and turning his season all the way around. Tonight’s blast was of the three-run variety, but it also came with two outs late in a tie-game — a game in which the Cubs had just gone ahead before immediately surrendering that lead. Spirits were down, but Happ came through.
Just a huge, huge moment for both him and the Cubs.
That was Happ’s eighth homer of the year, but his sixth in just his last 83 plate appearances.
That homer was also crazy because Happ should have never stepped up to the plate in the first place. The inning arguably should have ended three separate times. First, when the Giants just decided not to catch Patrick Wisdom’s infield pop-up. Second, when Wisdom’s stolen base attempt was nearly foiled by a loose ball. Third when Cody Bellinger got away with not one but TWO easily should-be strikes, the ump just plainly missed.
And even after all that, Seiya Suzuki had to stay alive (he hit an RBI-double). Just a crazy series of events.
