The mystery around Brennen Davis’s absence from the Iowa Cubs’ lineup the last few weeks is no longer a mystery: it’s his back again.
But it’s a different issue. And it sounds bad:
You may recall that Davis dealt with back issues in 2022, which preceded surgery that wiped away most of his season. Then, in 2023, there were some other core muscle issues that also led to a diminished season and surgery. This year, Davis was finally back on track – and raking! – at Iowa, before this latest absence.
For now, I have no idea exactly what happened to cause the back fracture, or whether it has anything to do with his previous issues. All I know for sure is that I am really, really bummed out. I feel terrible for Brennen Davis, who has been through the ringer the last few years.
More soon, I expect. Depending on the length of his absence and the prognosis from there, the Cubs may once again have to make a tough 40-man roster decision on Davis after the season. I hate thinking about that stuff, though, and I just hope for the best for him right now. There’ll be time later for the logistics.
