Enhanced Box Score: Phillies 6, Cubs 4 – July 2, 2024

Sure, the Cubs strung together a couple of hits before a late-game, three-run Seiya Suzuki blast, but it was just a classic fake rally before an otherwise inevitable loss.

Indeed, even including the ninth inning tonight, the Cubs went down 1-2-3 in order SIX times in nine innings. That is just some incredible sleep-walking-through-the-season nonsense. And it wasn’t like they were facing Zack Wheeler (he’s tomorrow …). They let a 25-year-old rookie making his first big league start hold them to 1 run on 2 hits over 5.0 innings at Wrigley Field. It’s just bad. The team doesn’t work.

Ian Happ, Nico Hoerner, Christopher Morel, and PCA combined to go 0-19 with 6Ks. A few guys reached base multiple times, and Cody Bellinger seemed to be hitting it well enough. But at the end of the day, 5 hits and 2 walks just isn’t going to cut it.

On the flip side, Hayden Wesneski had another rough outing in which he gave up two more homers. He’s now allowed 10 blasts in his last 20.2 innings pitched. For whatever qualities we like about him/his stuff, that can’t really continue. Or maybe it could because it literally doesn’t matter anymore. Might as well see if he can figure something out. Or not. I honestly am having a hard time caring about the team right now.

And in that spirit, I’m cancelling the Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game tonight. No one deserves it. Team stinks. Season stinks.
