Rocket Mortgage Classic Tee Times – The PGA Tour is heading to the Motor City for the Rocket Mortgage Classic as we approach the year’s final major and the FedExCup Playoffs. Following two major events and the U.S. Open, the field at this tournament is not as strong, with many top golfers taking a break after a series of recent tournaments.
The Detroit Golf Club, designed by Donald Ross, is a classical, tree-lined course known for producing a high number of birdies on the Tour. Established in 1899, the club’s North Course (1916) is the oldest annual course in the Tour rotation. This year marks the sixth edition of the tournament, with past champions including Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Davis, and last year’s winner, Rickie Fowler.

The Detroit Golf Club, with its lack of hazards off the tee, has historically favored longer hitters. However, it’s important to note that players of all styles have found success here, with shorter hitters also making their mark on past leaderboards. The key to mastering this course lies in the ability to putt well, excel with wedges, and score on par-5s, making it a true test of a golfer’s all-around skills.
Unfortunately, due to its placement in the PGA Tour schedule, golf fans in metro Detroit will see a relatively weaker field this year. None of the players in this event are ranked in the top 20. The notable players expected to compete this week include Cam Young, Tom Kim, Akshay Bhatia, Chris Kirk, Min Woo Lee, Will Zalatoris, Stephan Jaeger, Nicolai Hojgaard, Robert Macintyre, and Fowler, all of whom are in the top 50 of the world rankings.
With dozens of players shut out from playing in the small-field “Signature” events, there is a relatively deep group of second-tier players in attendance, including Daniel Berger, 2021 winner Cam Davis, Taylor Moore, Keith Mitchell, Alex Noren, Aaron Rai, Maverick McNealy, Adam Svensson, and Eric Cole. Along with Kirk, Jaeger, and Macintyre, several other players have PGA Tour wins this year that are in the field, like Pendrith, Nick Dunlap, Jake Knapp, Peter Malnati, Davis Riley, and Chris Gotterup.
The North Course is a Par 72 course that measures 7,370 yards and consists of four par-3s, ten par-4s, and four par-5s. It is considered one of the easier courses on the PGA Tour rotation, with a historical average score of -1.79. Players aiming to contend will need to shoot low rounds each day. Previous winning scores at this course have ranged from 18-under to 26-under.
The course features tree-lined fairways and relatively flat terrain. When it joined the Tour rotation in 2019, it was noted as having the flattest terrain on Tour, with a standard deviation of terrain change of 2.18 feet. Most holes run north to south or south to north, with a few doglegs mixed in.
Due to its lack of length and penal areas off the tee, the course allows for a high volume of birdies. The forgiving nature of the course means there is not as much separation between great and below-average tee-to-green play, making putting skills particularly crucial. Additionally, recent rainfall and soft conditions contribute to receptive greens and favorable scoring conditions.
