How Many Times Have the Wizards Selected No. 2 Overall?
The Wizards have had the number 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft three times in franchise history. In 1963, they drafted Rod Thorn out of West Virginia when they were the Baltimore Bullets. Thorn played one season with the Bullets averaging 14.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists before being traded to the Detroit Pistons.
The Wizards (then Bullets) also had the no. 2 overall pick in 1967 and 1968. In 1967, they drafted Earl Monroe from Winston-Salem State and took Wes Unseld from Louisville in 1968.
Monroe won Rookie of the Year and earned a first-team All-NBA selection in 1969 in Baltimore. He averaged 23.7 points per game in 5 seasons with the franchise and made two All-Star teams.
Wes Unseld spent his entire career with the franchise as he played for the Baltimore, Capital, and Washington Bullets. Unseld won MVP and Rookie of the Year in his first season averaging 13.8 points and 18.2 rebounds per game.
In 13 seasons with the Bullets, he averaged 10.8 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while making 5 All-Star teams and earning a first-team All-NBA nod.
Recent Wizards Season Results
The Washington Wizards switched to the name in 1997 and haven’t enjoyed as much success as the Bullets teams of old. The Wizards haven’t reached a Conference Finals since 1979 when they were the Washington Bullets and lost 4-1 to the SuperSonics in the NBA Finals.
The Wizards have made the playoffs just 9 times since 1997 and most of those trips have ended with first-round losses. The Bullets were a premier franchise in the 1970s as they reached the NBA Finals in 1971, 1975, 1978, and 1979. The team won a title in 1978 beating the SuperSonics in 7 games.
