NFL Notes: Jerry Jeudy Injury Update, TNF Reactions, More

I discussed it in today’s new This Week in Football column, but the NFL preseason needs to be shorter. It’s Week 3, and I’m already tapped out. Plus, the injuries are piling up at an insane rate in the last 7-10 days. Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was one of the latest players to suffer an injury that will jeopardize his availability for the start of the regular season.

  • After running an end-around in team drills during Denver’s joint practice with the Rams on Thursday, Jeudy grabbed his upper right leg after the play. He was treated by the team’s trainers on the field and then taken to the locker room on a cart as a precautionary measure. Although, with Jeudy holding his right leg just above his knee and not able to put any pressure on it, the injury seemed much worse in real-time.
  • Fortunately for the Broncos, it’s not a serious injury. “It’s a hamstring,” Broncos coach Sean Payton confirmed after practice. “We’ll get an MRI and see where he’s at with it.” Denver has had awful luck with the health of their receiving corps this summer. Tim Patrick suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon during the first week of Broncos camp. K.J. Hamler was diagnosed with a heart ailment that is being treated, and second-year wideout Jalen Virgil suffered a knee injury in last week’s loss to the 49ers and is now on injured reserve.
  • Despite some early drops, Jeudy looked more comfortable in the Denver offense during training camp. It’s unfortunate for Jeudy, who has had trouble staying on the field. He missed three games with an ankle injury last season and had some hamstring troubles in the offseason workouts leading into the 2022 season. He was also held out of some of the Broncos’ offseason work this past spring with a thigh injury. Jeudy also missed six games with an ankle injury in 2021 to go with another game due to COVID-19 protocols.

  • Colts fans were riding some good vibes last night as Anthony Richardson led them on multiple scoring drives. ESPN’s Pat McAfee said during a visit with Al Michaels and Kirk Hirbstreet in the Amazon Prime Video TNF booth that “Anthony Richardson’s gonna lead us to a Super Bowl.”
  • Richardson played the first half for the Colts, completing 6-of-17 passes for 78 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also ran for 38 yards on five attempts. The box score wasn’t pretty, and Richardson’s performance wasn’t without flaw, but the arm talent and athleticism that had Jim Irsay and Chris Ballard in love with the former Florida Gator was flashed plenty.
  • Ready or not, Richardson is going to be the Colts starting quarterback when they open their regular season schedule in two weeks. Backup QB Gardner Minshew completed 9-11 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in relief, and the Colts topped the Eagles 27-13 in their preseason finale.
  • Kenny Pickett and the Steelers offense look dangerous in the other Thursday night game. Pickett completed all four of his pass attempts for 86 yards, and the Steelers first-team offense scored on the Falcons’ reserves at will. Granted, it was the Falcons reserves, but the Steelers offense was clicking again. They’ve had an excellent preseason.
  • The Arizona Cardinals were busy birds swinging a trio of trades on Thursday. Arizona dealt a pair of 2020 draft picks, Isaiah Simmons (eighth overall) and Josh Jones (third round), to the Giants and Texans, respectively. They also traded for veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs.
  • The Dobbs trade signaled that rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson will serve as Deshaun Watson’s primary backup in Cleveland this season. The Browns rescinded their waiver release of Kellen Mond, who will likely be the team’s emergency quarterback this season.
  • It pained me to write this up, but Jordan Love was excellent last week against the Patriots:
  • A HUGE sigh of relief here for Bears fans!
