The New York Giants will be without quarterback Daniel Jones in practice today. Jones is dealing with a neck injury suffered in their Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins. However, head coach Brian Daboll says that running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) will be ramped up in practice beginning today as the Giants look to get their star running back on the field this weekend.
Jones left Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins after being sacked and he has been getting hit a lot behind an ineffective Giants offensive line. Jones said on Monday that he was sore, but felt fine and would see how he felt as the week went on.
“It’s different than what I’ve dealt with in the past. Just trying to heal up as fast as possible, follow the advice from the trainers and doctors but I’m feeling better,” Jones said.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that he was “optimistic” that Jones would be cleared for action in time for the Giants’ Week 6 matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Today, Daboll said that Jones is still sore and will not practice with the team on Wednesday. According to Daboll, Jones is still day-to-day with that neck injury. If Jones can’t go, the Giants will likely turn to backup QB Tyrod Taylor who replaced Jones last weekend.
The Giants will also be without tight end Darren Waller at practice today. Daboll said that Waller is dealing with a groin issue that will keep him sidelined on Wednesday. Like Jones, Daboll says that Waller is considered day-to-day.
On the bright side, Daboll said that the Giants will begin to ramp running back Saquon Barkley up in practice today. Barkley has been sidelined since leaving their Week 2 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.
