Did we really expect anything different tonight? I mean, save for the Chiefs offense not lighting the Broncos defense up, this is about what we expected. Kansas City made light work of the Broncos at home tonight, moving to 5-1 on the season in their fifth straight win since losing to Detroit on opening night.
The Broncos moved one game closer to their trade deadline fire sale, falling to 1-5 on the season. Russell Wilson looked as bad as he has since arriving in Denver, and that’s saying something. Wilson completed 13 for 22 passes for 95 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Most of his yardage and his lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter.
But Wilson might not have been the worst player on the field wearing navy and orange tonight. Sean Payton was bad, Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy was bad. The defense, which has allowed more passing touchdowns than any other team in the NFL this season entering play (13) was actually the best aspect of the Broncos game tonight. Well, except for leaving Travis Kelce open all night.
Travis Kelce came into this one with questions surrounding his ankle, but it played no role in tonight’s contest as Kelce hauled in nine passes for 124 yards.
Kansas City has won the last 16 meetings with the Denver Broncos, continuing their total domination over their AFC West rivals in recent seasons.
Game Balls
Travis Kelce — 9 REC, 124 YDS
Patrick Mahomes — 30/40, 306 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT
Harrison Butker — 4/4 FG (35, 60, 25, 52), 1/1 XP
Key Takeaways
I can’t believe that anyone thought that Travis Kelce’s ankle would slow him down tonight. The Chiefs tight end turned in a heck of a performance, nothing seven catches and 109 yards before halftime, proving once again that he’s The Man.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs continued to struggle to put up points against teams not named the Bears. Are the Chiefs playing down to the lesser competition? Are they coasting through the soft part of the schedule? Or is there a more significant issue here? It’s too early to answer the first two questions. Still, Kansas City’s offense has been very pedestrian in the first six games of the season, save for the shellacking they delivered to the Bears in Week 3.
The Chiefs defense continues to make them look very good despite their offensive shortcomings in the first quarter of the season. Kansas City’s defense sacked Russell Wilson four times and logged three takeaways in the victorious effort.
If the Broncos are indeed going to look to sell at the deadline, their potential players to trade did themselves or the team no favors tonight. Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy combined for seven catches and 60 yards. Sutton had a case of the dropsies. Jeudy did nothing to shut up former NFL receiver and current TNF analyst Steve Smith, who called him an average receiver he wouldn’t recommend any team trade for.
